Nominet are the organisation who oversee domains ending in .uk. Members of the public do not normally register a domain directly through Nominet but use a Nominet appointed registration agent. Nominet have been registering Domain Names since August 1996 and is now officially recognised by the UK Government as the manager of the .uk domain names, Nominet are now one of the world's largest Internet registries and manage over six million domain names and maintain the register of all.uk domain names.

Domain Registrars |
A domain registrar is simply a person or organisation who registers domain names on your behalf through the main registrant bodies.
As with .uk names where Nominet are the body in charge of all UK domain names - there are various bodies or organisations who are ultimately in charge of the various other domain name extensions.
Although in some cases members of the public are able to register names directly with these organisations - it is usually more cost effective for names to be registered using a "registrar". A registrar pays to become a member of the organising body and as such is then afforded "discounts" when registering names through the body. This is one of the reasons why domain registration agents all charge different rates for domian names - although of course many other factors are also relevant.
Often we find that Domain Names have been registered through cheap unscrupulous providers and the result is that clients find they arent really in control of their domain names and that the providers will make charges to actually arrange forwarding - in many cases it is a fact that in order to use the names they have purchased clients have to endeavour to "find their way " round online systems to acrry out changes to the set up.

| Domain Name System |
The Domain Name System or (DNS) helps users to find their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address It is called its "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol").
IP Addresses are hard to remembe and consit of numbers and dots The DNS makes using the Internet easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (i.e. the domain name) to be used instead of the IP address. So instead of typing for example 213.151.158.6, you can type www.myname.co.uk. which is a lot easier for you and others to recognise and remember. The domain name is needed so that we have a human-readable way of accessing all the computers on the internet.

| Domain Name Extensions |
Not all registrars can register all domain extensions. Apart from the commonly registered domains, (those with .co.uk or .com). As it is quite likely that the name you are wanting to register may have already been taken with a .co.uk or a .com extension - it is becoming therefore quite popular to choose from one of the alternative extensions such as .net or .uk.com or .biz which are now available.
Originally there were essentially just a handful of different domain name extensions to choose from. (A domain name extension is the topmost part of the domain name under which all domains are registered, such as .com or .co.uk). Now the extensions to choose from are endless - although it is usually just tthe better known ones which are the most popular.

| Registration Name Details - Who owns the domain name? |
To register your domain name, the registration agent should ask you for specific contact information. Make sure that the agent registers your domain name in either the name of your business or your own name. This will give you the authority to make subsequent changes to the registration. If, however, you register a domain name containing a trade-marked term, the trade mark's owner could force you to surrender the domain registration. |

| Domain registration periods and Expiry of Domain Names |
Domain names are unique, their definitions are all held in central databases. Once a domain name has been registered it cannot be used or registered by anyone else until the domain name registration period expires.
Domain names are registered for a fixed period ranging from 1 year to 10 years depending on the extensions. All domains have an expiry date.This means that at the end of the term the domain has to be renewed in order for you or your company to continue using it.
As the end of your registration period draws near - you will be offered the opportunity to renew. GCW inform you at least 60 days before the period expires - giving plenty of time for you to ensure that your name is retained for a further period.
