SMTP is an abbreviation for "Simple Mail Transport Protocol"

SMTP is the main Internet protocol used to send email (electronic mail, or e-mail). When someone speaks of a SMTP server they are referring to an outgoing mail server. SMTP is a set of rules regarding the interaction between a program sending e-mail and a program receiving e-mail. When you send email, its first stop is a server running SMTP. When someone speaks of a SMTP server they are referring to an outgoing mail server.
